A Seat for Rachel Maddow?

by Laura Nguyen

If you’ve watched MSNBC lately, you’ve probably noticed a not so new face in town.  A few nights before the Fourth of July, Rachel Maddow, host of the liberal talk show, Air America, sat in for Keith Olbermann. You’re not the only one who has noticed Maddow. Thursday, the New York Times raised the questions (a.) will Maddow soon have a seat of her own and (b.) will America be ready for an openly gay host?

Check out this recent video from Maddow on “Countdown.”

Even Phil Griffin, the newly promoted president of MSNBC, has taken note of Maddow’s talents. Wednesday, Griffin confirmed in a Kansas City Star interview with Aaron Barnhart, that Maddow is the new permanent fill-in anchor for Keith Olbermann on “Countdown,” replacing Alison Stewart. However, there is a conversation brewing from Maddow’s rising profile on MSNBC and the high potential of her own show.

There is no doubt that, if Maddow’s dreams come true, she’ll play a pivotal role for women and for lesbians. Her diverse perspective will be a powerful asset to the visibility of a community of women of any color, gay, straight, bisexual, transgender. Maddow is truly an inspiring and brilliant woman who serves as a role model for lesbians today. She is a Stanford and Oxford graduate and the first openly gay American to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. Not going to lie … I’m now a fan. What are your thoughts?

Rachel Maddow is indeed a role model and not only for lesbians but for all women. Perhaps we are edging just a bit closer to the day when ones sexual orientation is deemed irrelevant and one is judged on other factors like intelligence and/or accomplishments.

Rachel Maddow is great. MSNBC should give her David Gregory’s time slot. He’s a better reporter than host. His “Race For White House” show is much better when Maddow is subbing for him.
