LGBT LULAC Chapter in Dallas is Recognized

by Ivette López Sisniega

J0401121I have written before about Texas being a good place for gay Hispanics and once again, the Lone Star State is stepping up to the plate of serving our growing and passionate Hispanic LGBT community.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States focusing on advancing Latino civil rights.  It is set up nationwide with local chapters across multiple cities across the states. The Rainbow Council of LULAC in Dallas is the first one to include LGBT issues on their platform and won this year’s statewide Council of the Year award, beating out an estimated 200 other LULAC chapters according to Advocate.com. This week, the national award will be presented, and the Rainbow Council is being considered for that national award.

LULAC works very closely with all kinds of Latinos, from the third generation affluent businessman to the newly arrived immigrant and is a brand that Latinos trust. Taking this step in serving and working to represent LGBT Hispanics is helping change outdated perceptions and move towards a progressive community.

The Rainbow Council’s good work did not go unnoticed as this announcement was picked up by the Dallas Voice, LatinCast.net, Advocate.com and PlanetOut.com among many others.

Felicidades a  nuestros amigos en Dallas y al equipo de Jesse Garcia.
