Tonight’s Real TV Conflict

by Steve Kauffman

Tonight I’ll be in front of the television, like many others, to see the final in the series. I’ve been anticipating tonight’s uninterrupted TV time, inviting friends over to applaud, boo and hiss as appropriate.  I’m not talking about watching the final presidential debate. There’s been no drama and not much palpable conflict in this series of presidential debates.

I’m talking about a program much less scripted – real reality TV – the finale of this season’s Project Runway on Bravo.

Project_runway_logoIt has been a dramatic season. There’s been on-screen conflict as well as behind-the-scenes drama since the series announced plans to jump from Bravo to Lifetime after this season.  This season had its highlights, including a pretty even distribution of the villain role played by various cast members leading into the final four. Lots of crying, especially in last week’s episode.

And, it had the most gay designers than ever before, almost half the total contestants. One has to wonder, while the decks were so overwhelmingly stacked in shear numbers, how did none of them make it to the final three?  On the other hand, a final three composed completely of women designers may be a fitting segue for the show’s planned move to Lifetime.
