Parting Words: The Personal is Political

Posted by Ben Finzel

Ben-finzel In my very first blog post here, I made the point that this blog would be about the intersection of LGBT issues with the business world because that’s what would influence political and other change. I called it the politics of commerce.

In this, my very last blog post here, I want to amend that thought slightly. For me, the personal is political. As you’ve likely determined if you've read any of my more than 200 posts, I’m a political person with a very focused idea about the role of business in influencing politics and social change.

Nearly three years ago, I set out with a group of Fleishman-Hillard colleagues to build a gay and lesbian communications blog that would provide an opportunity to make that case every day, using examples from current events to prove the point. I think we’ve succeeded. The Out Front Blog is growing in recognition, our readers are interested and engaged in what we have to say, and our reputation as thoughtful, intelligent and even funny commenters is solid. I’m very proud of this creation and impressed with the intelligence, insight and intuition of the 12 other people who have made this blog what it is today.

I will miss the regular opportunity to share my thoughts on this forum. The Out Front Blog is one of the only places of its type on the Web: a forum for out LGBT public relations professionals to examine issues of the day through the lens of gay and lesbian communications. In more than 660 posts (to date), we’ve examined the full spectrum of gay and lesbian communications and I’m confident that the team will continue to do that every business day for at least another 660 posts.

But I won’t be here with them. I’m moving on to the next chapter in my life in a new firm and leaving the Out Front Blog and FH Out Front behind. I know that the team will be more than fine without me, but that doesn’t make leaving any less sad. I’ve had so much fun in this space and so enjoyed the community we have built.

You’ll still be able to reach me via my blogging on Bilerico DC or on Twitter and I hope that those of you who want to keep in touch will do so. For now, I want to leave the way I started: by encouraging you to visit this blog often and to share your thoughts with its authors. It’s still the best place to do that and it’s still the best way you can have an impact on this conversation.

After nearly three years of this great experiment, I believe that for all of us the personal is political. By the very nature of our existence, we make the case for the power of LGBT communications every day. And I hope that will never change.

Feedback Friday – We Want To Hear From You!

Posted by Ben Finzel

J0408931 Six weeks ago, we tried something new: Feedback Friday. We asked you to share your thoughts with us to spur discussions, suggest blog topics for the future and present diverse points of view on relevant gay and lesbian communications issues.

Our first attempt received a positive reply (and some spam – sigh), so we thought we’d try again. Today’s post is all about you. What do you want to talk about? What should we be discussing in our posts?

We want to hear from you. Please leave a comment below, send us a direct message on Twitter (@outfrontblog) or leave us a message on our Facebook fan page (Out Front Blog).

Here are a few other questions to consider:

  • What is the most important gay and lesbian communications topic that you think is being ignored or underreported in so-called “mainstream” media?

  • What sources do you rely on for gay and lesbian news?
  • Which Out Front Q&A was your favorite?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Feedback Friday – What Do You Think?

Posted by Ben Finzel

J0402594 We’ve noticed that our comments have really tapered off lately – well, except for those spam comments from random sites trying to sell unrelated products (ugh).

We’ve also noticed that we’re getting a lot of new visitors this week from davekoz.com and afterelton.com (thanks for the stories, guys!). Welcome to our new visitors!

To further engage our regular readers and welcome our new ones, we’re going to try something new today. We call it “Feedback Friday” and it’s all about you.

We want to hear from you. Please leave a relevant, non-spam comment below, or send us a direct message on Twitter (@outfrontblog). Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What do you think about recent media coverage of gay and lesbian communications issues? Has it been fair or biased? Do media seem to understand how to cover trans issues (such as Chaz Bono's transition, for example)?
  • What gay and lesbian communications topics would you like to see us address in the future? What are your favorite gay and lesbian communications topics?
  • What suggestions for Q&As do you have for us? Which ones have been most interesting to you so far?

We look forward to hearing from you!

What’s Next

J0438658 By now, we hope you’ve seen Steve’s Fond Farewell post. If not, we encourage you to check it out.

As with Eddy’s return to England last year, Steve’s departure this month is a big loss for us. As a team, we’re all sad about what it means to us personally. Steve has been a great colleague and an even better friend. Fortunately, we’ll be able to keep in touch with him via Twitter, Facebook and countless other electronic means. And we’re looking forward to his comments on our blog posts as well! Now that he’s not co-editing each post with me, it will be really interesting to see what he has to say about our thoughts.

So, you may be wondering, what will we do to fill the void on the Out Front Blog created by Steve’s departure? Well, there’s no replacing him, that’s for sure. For now, we’ll add extra blog posts by the team and we’ll increase the number of Q&As to ensure we have fresh new content to share. We already have a few topics lined up for both of these options. And Peter Klaus, one of our original bloggers, will boost his participation and begin blogging more regularly again (check out his past work on his bio page).

Longer term, we’ll be looking for new bloggers from our network to add to the team. If the new folks are even half as good as the team we have, we’ll be in very good shape.

Rest assured that there is more good stuff to come. We look forward to continuing to engage with you along the way.

Two Years Later

Posted by Ben Finzel

J0316490Two years ago tomorrow, the Out Front Blog celebrated National Coming Out Day by coming out ourselves. Now, more than 470 blog posts later, we’re pleased to celebrate the thirteen Out Front Blog bloggers, dozens of Q&A interviews, hundreds of comments and tens of thousands of visitors that have been part of the past two years.

In celebrating our second anniversary, we thought it might be useful and appropriate to take a step back and look at why we’re doing this and why we think gay and lesbian communications outreach is important. But it’s not enough for us to share our own thoughts, so we asked some of our friends to share their views too. The combined thoughts of our bloggers and friends are listed below. If you’d like to add your own, please do so in the comments section – we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for your interest and engagement in our little part of the blogosphere over the past two years – and here’s to you for making this conversation possible!

Ben, Steve, Peter, Ivette, Laura, Kim, Bryan and Michael
